MBA internships - Forum

So I'm a bit confused as to how there can be such a thing as an MBA internship. Even Google is hiring MBA interns, but aren't MBAs supposed to be for people working in business & management who are presumably already at quite an advanced stage in their career? I don't really understand how it all fits together. Incidentally, what would you say are the typical pre-requisites needed to apply for an MBA? Thanks.

One of the up sides of the internship is to make money during a very expensive degree: http://poetsandquants.com/2013/06/14/what-mba-interns-are-being-paid/

Hi Jonas,

Jesse makes a great point in that internships are an excellent opportunity for MBA candidates to earn a bit of cash mid term (though the salaries paid to MBA interns vary widely depending on the sector and companies they are employed in).

To answer you question, MBA internships do actually add quite a bit of value to a candidate's education. While they are often relatively advanced in their careers (average of 5 years experience for top full-time programs), the MBA internship allows them to apply new knowledge in an actual business environment during the program. This is especially important (and most common) in full-time programs where candidates do not work while they study. In EMBA programs (where candidates continue to work and have 5-10+ years of experience), MBA internships are uncommon.

In terms of pre-requisites, top programs absolutely require around 4-5 years of professional experience, though some students get admitted with as little as 1year. You will also need refernces, an excellent academic background and a GMAT score above 650. For mid-tier and unranked schools, the qualifications are similar, but to a lesser degree.

Best,

Sounds like good advice to get an internship in consulting.

Do MBA students commonly get hired at their internship locations if they perform well?
