Peter Oredsson

Deciding on an MBA program can be a daunting task because of the plethora of programs currently offered. Prospective students need to decide between full-time, part-time, executive, and distance learning programs. There are also programs with specialized concentrations.

SearchMBA.com interviewed one executive MBA student to see how he narrowed down the choices and found the right program for him. Peter Oredsson is enrolled in the two-year EMBA program at Stockholm University and recently completed his first year of studies. We talked to him about why he chose this EMBA program, how his first year went, and his expectations for the future.

Stockholm Business School EMBA Alumni InterviewWhat did you do before starting the EMBA?

I’m currently working at an online marketing company as a production manager. Before that, I went to school at SMU in Dallas, TX, USA where I got my bachelor’s degree in economics.

Why did you decide to get your MBA?

I always wanted to get a graduate degree and this EMBA program was a great opportunity to go to school while still working. I wanted to learn more about being a manager, develop and meet others in similar situations who I could get to know and to learn from their experiences.

Can you tell us about some of the highlights of the year?

The ongoing discussions that we have in the class that arise from the fact that there are talented and interesting classmates from a variety of backgrounds sharing their wealth of knowledge has been the biggest highlight thus far. We’ve also had many different professors and lecturers who have been very interesting and knowledgeable.

Were you considering any other programs?

There were two main reasons why I picked this program. First, the schedule is very accommodating to my work responsibilities. Second, I really liked their focus on people as a central theme for the entire program. The philosophy for the program is very sound and it appealed to me since the first time I heard it.

What are the key benefits of the Stockholm Business School EMBA program?

The EMBA program has a great set up where you can work full time while getting a degree at half speed so you don’t have to miss much work. Stockholm University is also a large university so students have access to many professors from various departments who bring their expertise to the program.

What topics within the program interest you most?

I like areas that have finite answers to questions, which tend to be financial related areas. I enjoy anything that has to do with economics, and learning about different theories of organizations has also been interesting. I enjoy the fact that this program is a general MBA and is traditional in the sense that it teaches you to be a general manager and it covers many different topics. I enjoy the variety.

How do you think this Executive MBA Program will help you to achieve your career goals upon graduation next spring?

I’m hoping that this program will go a long way to prepare me for a job as a manager of a company or in a leading role at a large organization.

How much time does the program take?

It’s about 20 hours in the classroom per month and it’s reasonable to spend about that much time outside of class as well reading and completing both group and individual assignments. Some classes require less time while others require more. It is completely doable, albeit a little busy, to do at the same time as you’re working full time.

What advice would you give to candidates considering EMBA Programs?

If you’re interested in a program that focuses on many different parts of being a manager, an EMBA program might be for you. Often EMBA programs tend to focus more on one part of business, such as finance or marketing, for those who wish to go in one direction. In that case, this program is perhaps not the right one for you.

Although there are many things to consider when choosing an Executive MBA program, there are helpful resources available to help you make the right choice.
