MBA Modular

The University of Stellenbosch (South Africa) has stringent admission criteria, which result in higher retention and pass rates.

These criteria include the successful completion usually of Mathematics at school exit level, the successful completion of the SHL or GMAT selection test, and a favourable assessment of both the candidate’s level of motivation and working experience.

Applicants must also have one of the following:

• A recognised bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification, and at least three years of relevant full-time work experience
• A three-year national diploma or equivalent qualification approved by Stellenbosch University, and at least six years of relevant full-time work experience.

The content of the Modular MBA is structured into three phases, namely

• Business Fundamentals
• Management in Context
• Management Enhancement

Phase 1 and Phase 2 consist of class contact sessions, while Phase 3 consists of various options.

The preparation for and writing of the research report will run parallel to Phases 2 and 3.

Phase 1: Management Fundamentals

This phase prepares students to operate in a business environment by covering the basic tools and frameworks required for business decision-making. The detailed content of the basic management tools is defined by that which is required in the Management in Context phase (Phase 2). The following modules are delivered during this phase:

• Business Fundamentals
• Personal Skills Development (Information Literacy, Presentation Skills and Writing Skills)
• Economics for Managers
• Decision Analysis
• Management Accounting
• Leadership Orientation and Context
• Research Methodology

Phase 2: Management in Context

This phase is structured in three broad and overlapping learning clusters: Individual, Organisation and Environment. The following modules are delivered during this phase:

• Business Finance
• Operations and Information Management
• Business Environment
• Marketing Management
• Strategic Management
• Leadership Development

Phase 3: Management Enhancement

Specialisation and management enhancement opportunities, which make out approximately 10% of the University of Stellenbosch MBA, allow students to customise their MBA. This part of the programme offers the following:

• Electives: These include the University of Stellenbosch electives (a list of about 30 topics from which to choose), University of Stellenbosch -ED programmes and electives presented on the international study tour
• Field work: This includes consultation, internships and action learning projects.
• International exchange opportunities: Students can complete part of their studies at the University of Stellenbosch’s overseas partner schools.
