Language study in the IMBA:

language studies in the IMBAAll IMBA students need to have verbal fluency in at least two languages. Students can enhance their skills in one of the world's major business languages: French, German, Japanese, Mandarin, Spanish and English as a Second Language (for students from abroad). Other IMBA region specialization languages may be considered and in the past have included: Portuguese, Cantonese, Hindi, Russian, Tagalog, Korean, and Serbo-Croatian. The language of specialization must be spoken in your region of specialization. Students graduate with the demonstrated ability to conduct business in an international language.

IMBA students graduate with the capacity to conduct business in a second language. Working on a language for two years of study within the IMBA program is not enough to achieve this level of proficiency. Therefore, students must enter the IMBA program with a minimum certified American Council for Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) oral proficiency level of Intermediate-High and this language is typically a student’s second language.

In order to qualify for the IMBA program, a language must be:

  • spoken in one of the regions offered by the IMBA (Asia Pacific, Europe, Latin America, North America or South and Southeast Asia); and
  • testable by an official Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) tester as trained and certified by ACTFL.

Supported languages are those taught in the IMBA program and include, but are not restricted to:

  • French
  • German
  • Japanese
  • Mandarin
  • Spanish
  • English as a Second Language (generally reserved for international students)

Talk to Schulich School of Business to discuss language possibilities.

IMBA Global Work Term:

global work term of the IMBAStudents in the IMBA program have the opportunity to gain first-hand work experience in the language and region they specialize in during their studies at Schulich. While on the Global Work Term, you will gain exposure to different business and cultural conditions, apply the latest management techniques and skills acquired in the classroom and enhance your understanding of your region of specialization.

To date, some 500 organizations in over 50 countries have hosted IMBA students for work on a variety of short-term projects. Host organizations have benefited tremendously from IMBA students’ unique education, fresh perspectives, well-honed management skills and strong motivation. Work Terms may be in private, non-profit or public sector organizations, and site projects may vary depending on role, company, industry and country. In the past, common projects have included industry analyses, market research and audits/assessments of company expenditures.

The Work Term typically takes place in Term 3 (May to August) or Term 4 (September to December), and is a full-time commitment that lasts a minimum of 12 weeks. The IMBA Program suggests that a host organization reimburse its IMBA student at a rate that accurately reflects the nature of the project the student undertakes. However, some students may choose to accept unpaid Work Terms in order to acquire specialized experience. It should be noted that in some countries unpaid Work Terms are the norm.

While it is ultimately the student’s responsibility to find an appropriate Work Term, the Assistant Director of the International MBA Program - Internships & Corporate Services, will provide you with support and advice to help you make connections and gain access to valuable resources.

One of the most memorable and meaningful experiences of the IMBA program, the Work Term will give you real-world international business experience to enhance your ability to participate in the global economy upon graduation.

Degree and diploma etc.

Students graduate with an International MBA from the Schulich School of Business. Due to the International focus of the IMBA, students must demonstrate language proficiency consistent with a minimum level of an American Council for Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) level of Advanced-Mid in order to graduate.
